COLOSSEUM DREAM
Posted by Erik Frey Tue, 18 Feb 2003 06:38:00 GMT
i had a dream last night. i was visiting the colosseum, except in my dream it was still in mint condition, with the walls intact and the massive wooden stage/platform covering the hallways underneath. the only curious difference, and this was something of a matter of fact in my dream, was that the colosseum was infested with roaches, so much so that you couldn’t see the stage. it was simply a sea of brown, and the sea rolled over all the benches and archways and corridors, and emitted this roar of hissing and clicking that one might definitely find unsettling.

when i was seven, johnny took me to hawaii for the summer.
more than surfing, or body-boarding, or anything else, what i remember most about that summer was waking up early, before anyone else, and running out to the sea…

If I have seen farther, it is because I have stood on the backs of giants.

it’s frustrating to me.

the night before last, i had a dream that seems filled with symbolism, but hell if i know what it means:
dining-room table. a 5-year old me is sitting at the head of the table, with a hot bowl of pasta in front of him. he’s dressed like a news-boy, complete with floppy cap.

these thoughts have been whirling around my head so much recently, it’s almost obnoxious. the past couple of weeks have had such a strong theme, i could almost call it a flavor and package a new bubble gum brand after it.
so,
there have been some interesting advances in technology recently.

i went to sushi for lunch at my favorite haunt, and the waiter walks up, points behind me, cups his mouth and whispers “gene hackman!”

1985.
stickers were big, as were shrinky-dinks and garbage pail kids. i was always looking at the ground, because the upper west side had a way of collecting pennies and dimes in its cracks and gutters. by the end of the day i had enough for a couple of bazooka joe’s, or a package of rainblow gumballs.

MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR

i bought naola a plane ticket back to miami for christmas, but being short for cash, i bought myself a bus ticket. i’m no stranger to greyhound and i’ve come to expect the kind of weird shit that always happens to me on these buses.
i’d like to put my greyhound experiences in the realm of spiritual self-discovery, like a psychadelic dream voyage where your spirit guides are pissed off old bag ladies, crack addicts and mexican migrant workers… or maybe a message from the gods who graciously shine a light on your soul, except the gods are ill-tempered and have attention deficit disorder, so all you’re left with are mismatched experiences and imagery from which you may or may not derive meaning.

i was a curious child. i lived in fantasy world half the time, and the other half i lived in a real fantasy world, the noisy streets of the upper west side manhattan, NYC.
it was almost like some kind of half-autism… the part of me that acknowledges and appreciates the importance of the world around me only kicked in when i was maybe 11 or 12 years old. until then, i framed and filled the boring parts of the world with my imagination, and i think occasionally i’d forget the boundary between where my imagination ended and where the real world began.
